Hsinchu, Taiwan, January 17, 2012 - On the heels of being selected as the 2012 IEEE Frederik Philips Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Dr. C. Y. Lu, President of Macronix International Co., Ltd. has been honored with a Special Distinguished Award by Physical Society of Republic of China in Taiwan for his long-term contribution to applied physics, semiconductor technology, engineering R&D and industrial production, as well as his internationally recognized cultivation of talents, promotion of popular science education and exchange events for the industry and the role of technology policy counselor for Taiwan.
Dr. Lu’s practical application of basic physics knowledge in semiconductor device manufacturing has substantially influenced and contributed to the founding and development of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. His roles in the industry include heading the Ministry of Economic Affairs' National Submicron Project and successfully leading this project to achieve Taiwan's development of its independent R&D and mass manufacturing of DRAM and SRAM. The results of which led to the setting up of 8-inch wafer foundry capability in Taiwan as well as making Taiwan an important player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
In recent years, the Dr. Lu led Macronix R&D team has attained innovative breakthrough in next-generation memory technology, including BE-SONOSTM (Band gap Engineered SONOS) technology which addresses the solution for SONOS production problems over the past 30 years, as well as driving the development of sub-10nm memory products and facilitating 3D integration.
In addition, the R&D team has cooperated with IBM to verify that phase change can exist in phase-change memory devices of below 20nm, offering a reference guide for academia and global industry for a semiconductor technology roadmap.
Dr. Lu occupies a very important position in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry development and has made world-class contributions in the science of semiconductors and advanced technologies, with the achievement leading to his winning the 2012 IEEE Frederik Philips Award in recognition of outstanding academic and leadership achievements.
In particular, the Physical Society of Republic of China noted that Dr. Lu has taken an active interest in physics education in universities, as well as to promote popular science education. Dr. Lu served as an editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices for 15 years and president for the Science Monthly magazine. In addition, Dr. Lu has actively participated in educational forums and keynote speeches regarding physics to expound the import role of physicists in development of high-tech industries and interdisciplinary R&D to enlighten students and encourage them to study physics.
Dr. Lu has also done a great deal of writing on semiconductor physics and related applied research, publishing more than 360 papers and obtaining more than 140 international patents. He was granted an IEEE Fellow, an American Physical Society Fellow and a Chinese Society for Management of Technology Fellow. In 2000, the IEEE awarded Dr. Lu a Millennium Medal in recognition of his economic and social contribution. In addition, Dr. Lu also received the National Invention Award and Best Project Award from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Pan WenYuan Outstanding Research Award from the Pan WenYuan Foundation, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from both National Chiao-Tung University and National Taiwan University, as well as many other honors.
The Special Distinguished Award was initiated in 1997 to recognize and honor those in Taiwan who have made a special contribution in the areas of physics. Among the 19 recipients are Shen Chun-shan (2001), former president of National Tsing Hua University, and Wu Mao-kuen (2007), former minister for the National Science Council.
